KyQHA President’s Message

It’s that time of the year. With no question there is more to do than time to get it done. And that is a good thing. I think? As I am writing this column some of our members are already on their way to the Union County Fairgrounds in Sturgis, Kentucky, for a Trail Trials, Novice Clinic and Show, and a single day AQHA horse show the KyQHA and KAQHA are trying at that location. All this activity is occurring just three weeks before the Kentucky Futurity at the Kentucky Horse Park.

In addition to these regular activities, the KyQHA has become much more involved in legislative activities that began last year, and have been continuing this year. These activities include work on the Kentucky Quarter Horse Breeder’s Incentive Program, the Kentucky Equine Education Project initiatives, and most recently the efforts on a national agenda to educate our United States Congressmen regarding the inadequacies of HR 503, the anti-slaughter legislation.

Never before has it been so evident that our association, and specifically our members, must maintain a presence in local, state and national politics. If we don’t, we will be left to wade through whatever remains after individuals without our best interests in mind have finished with their own personal agendas.

It would be my guess that you would probably rather go for a trail ride, check your broodmares and foals, go to a horse show, or visit the dentist rather than lobby your state and national politicians. So would I. But we can’t afford to allow people, groups and associations with their own agendas dictate how our industry will function in the future. It is happening right before our eyes, and we all have to take an active role to ensure that in five, ten or twenty years from now there will be a horse industry left for those who follow us.

The KyQHA will be inviting to a meeting later this year other stock horse type groups from across the state that have similar agendas with that of our association. By bringing these groups together, our collective voices will be greater than that of any individual group. It is our intention to become more involved in state politics with the intention of promoting the continued prosperity of the horse in Kentucky.

On a final note, please plan on attending the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association year-end convention the weekend of December 1-3, 2006. It will be at the Marriott Griffin Gate in Lexington, Kentucky. We will be trying some new approaches to the Saturday program and we hope you will plan on spending some time with us. There will be more specifics coming your way later this fall.

For those of you attending Congress and the World show, best of luck!

Sincerely,

Norm Luba
KyQHAPresident
