The Kentucky Quarter Horse Association lost a friend and supporter with the death of Dan Mallory.
Dan was a long time member of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Association and active participant.
His death in the crash of Flight 5191 on Aug. 27, 2006, leaves a void in Kentucky’s equine community. He owned and operated Meadow Heaven Farm in Bourbon County where he primarily raised Thoroughbreds. However, he was also interested in the stock horse business and served as president of the Bluegrass Horse Buckskin Horse Association.
Dan was en route to meet his two sons in Texas for a horse sales when the plane went down at take off from Bluegrass Field in Lexington. He was among 49 passengers who died at the scene.
Cause of the accident is still being investigated by state and local officials. Hundreds from the equine community gathered on Sept. 5 at a memorial service at Fasig-Tipton in Dan’s honor.
Former Gov. Brereton Jones, co-owner of Airdrie Stud, said at the service, “ Dan was one of the real solid people that I ‘ve known in my life. For him, right was right; wrong was wrong. He was the kind of person you loved to be friends with. We’re gong to miss him.”
He is survived by his wife, Edith Mallory; four children and three stepchildren.
