100-YARD DASH AMONG RACES TO BE RUN DURING JULY 17-18 AMERICAN QUARTER HORSE MEET AT THE RED MILE
The Kentucky Quarter Horse Racing Association has released the condition sheet and stakes information for its sixth annual American Quarter Horse race meet on Friday, July 17, and Saturday, July 18, at the Red Mile in Lexington. Through the participation of numerous sponsors in Central Kentucky and from across the United States, some $130,000 in purse money is available over the two nights of racing. New this year is the $5,000-guaranteed Scootin' & Bootin' Sprint, a 100-yard dash that will show off the explosive start and amazing speed of racing Quarter Horses. “We’re extremely gratified by the support of sponsors in the Lexington area, and throughout the American Quarter Horse and Thoroughbred industries,” said Anne Doolin, executive director of the Kentucky Quarter Horse Racing Association (KyQHRA). “We’ve packed a wide variety of races into these two days, and I think the crowd is going to love our new 100-yard dash. We’re all excited about this year’s meet, which would not have been possible without those individuals, farms and companies that support us.”
Sponsoring races this year are Airdrie Stud, Alltech, Belle Mere Farm of Oklahoma, Burnett Ranches of Texas, Hubbard Foundation of New Mexico, Paul Miller Ford/Fortune Realty, Vessels Stallion Farm of California, and the Eastern Kentucky health clinics operated Dr. Talmadge Hays, a KyQHRA board member. Additional sponsors include Ariat, Brett Construction, BB&T Equine Insurance, Cobra Farm, Crestwood Farm, Fayette Heating & Air, Futurity Hill Farm, Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center, Heritage Place of Oklahoma, Keeneland, Kentucky Downs, Lazy E Ranch of Oklahoma, Lexington Blacktop, Pieratt's, Powell Walton and Milward, Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital, Sallee Vans, Track Magazine of Texas, University of Kentucky Equine Initiative and the University of Louisville Equine Business Program.
Eight or nine races will be scheduled each evening at the Red Mile with the first race at 7:30 p.m. The program features these four stakes:
-
$15,000-guaranteed Fort Harrod Stakes for 2-year-olds at 300 yards.
-
$15-000-guaranteed Lexington Challenge Supplement Sprint Stakes, for 3-year-olds and up at 250 yards. The race is restricted to Bank of America Racing Challenge-enrolled horses, and the purse includes $10,000 from the John Deere Bonus Challenge. The John Deere Bonus Challenge is a program administered by the American Quarter Horse Association of Amarillo, Texas.
-
$15,000-guaranteed FDD Dynasty Stakes for 3-year-olds and up at 330 yards.
-
$15,000-guaranteed Bluegrass Derby for three-year-olds at 300 yards.
The FDD Dynasty Stakes is named in honor of the multiple champion who stands at Vessels Stallion Farm. A 2010 breeding to FDD Dynasty was donated by Billy Smith of New Mexico to benefit this year’s Red Mile meet. Other owners who donated a breeding include Belle Mere Farm, Scoop and Bonnie Vessels, Williams Racing Stable, Gerald Coltharp, Eucklie Henson, Jerald Collins and Ashley Meeks, and Rickey Thompson.
The Red Mile’s Racing Office will be open to take entries for both cards on Tuesday, July 14. Entries for the Friday card close at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 15, and entries for the Saturday card close at noon on Wednesday. Stakes nominations must be postmarked by Wednesday, July 1, and preference for the race is based on earnings as of July 6, 2008. The Scootin’ & Bootin’ Sprint also requires a nomination payment postmarked by July 1.
Special activities in conjunction with the race meet include a raffle to win the racehorse The Country Side, a 2-year-old Kentucky-bred son of champion The Down Side. Last year, the raffled horse, Streakin Traffic, won the race and became the first racehorse for owner Dave Holzwarth of Georgetown, Kentucky. The drawing to determine the raffle winner will take place on July 18 immediately before the race in which The Country Side will compete. The winner also will receive any earnings of The Country Side. Raffle tickets are $10 each and are available from the KyQHRA.
On July 16, the KyQHRA will hold its fourth annual Kick-Off Party at the historic Round Barn at the Red Mile. The fundraising event, which begins at 6 p.m. and is open to the public, will feature live and silent auctions, entertainment and food. Admission is $10.
